Muirtown & Clachnaharry

Muirtown Basin and South Kessock
Distance  2.8miles
Time  1 hour 15 mins

This is a circular route based around Muirtown Basin and the Merkinch Nature Reserve at South Kessock. Start at the car park next to the old ferry office in South Kessock. A stone plinth marks the Merkinch Nature Reserve. There are great views of the Beauly Firth and the mountains behind. This is a great area for wildlife so look out look for dolphins and seals, and wading birds.   Follow the seawall towards Muirtown, with the Firth on the right and a view of the Clachnaharry Sea Lock in the distance. Cross the railway line with care and continue on until you reach the steps up to the canal. If the tide is low there is a good view here of the witches grave, in the pool between the railway line and the sea wall.  Turn right and headed towards Clachnaharry locks and workshops. Continue on towards the workshops and lock, over the level crossing at the Clachnaharry railway swing bridge, and out to the sea lock. The canal extends out into the Firth to allow access to deeper water. Cross over the lock and head back towards Muirtown.  Back across the railway line and through the workshops, head towards the car park and into the Muirtown Basin. Cross over the canal at the Muirtown swing bridge, turn right and head back towards the Seaport Marina. Follow the track on the right and rejoin the towpath to complete the circuit of the basin. Rejoin the path long the seawall and return to the car park.

Rail crossings make this route less suited for cycling.
Alternative parking is available at Muirtown Basin parking.
